Focus Climate

Participatory workshop

Logo Focus Climate

On 18 June 2021, TA-SWISS and Science et Cité are holding a participatory workshop on the topic of the climate. The event ‘Focus Climate’ is taking place in collaboration with the Museum for Communication in Bern as part of the project ‘Planetopia. Raum für Weltwandel’ (Planetopia. Space for Global Change). You are cordially invited to participate in the discussion.

The climate is currently a hot topic: it has inspired school students to strike, is on the agenda of numerous conferences and podium discussions, divides opinion and raises many questions. The workshop ‘Focus Climate’ encourages participants to take a critical look at the current debate and to consider how information on climate change is presented and communicated.

The workshop also explores how our convictions and entrenched opinions influence our understanding of climate change – and possibly prevent objective debate of the subject. Another aspect under consideration concerns the scope of action available to the political sphere, economy, society and individual citizens in the context of Switzerland. How can we obtain factual information, and how can we learn to recognise ‘fake news’? What influence does the economy actually have on global warming? Do we have to fundamentally change our way of life? How will climate change affect Switzerland’s nature and countryside? Can new technologies curb global warming?

These are some of the questions that are up for discussion at the Focus Climate participatory event on 18 June 2021.

Organisation

Focus Climate is the fourth participatory workshop organised by TA-SWISS and Science et Cité. This year, another partner is also involved: the Museum for Communication in Bern, whose exhibition ‘Planetopia. Raum für Weltwandel’ is a testing site for determining the museum’s potential as a platform for social discourse. With its large-scale participatory project, the museum is addressing the ecological crisis and, in dialogue with a broad array of stakeholders, seeking ways in which society can address environmental problems. The Museum for Communication is joining this year’s ‘Focus Climate’ event as a partner for a productive and motivating dialogue.

Last year, the event was postponed from May 2020 to October 2020, and then again to June 2021 due to the coronavirus restrictions, as social distancing rules made conducting the participatory event impossible. TA-SWISS has taken the opportunity to adapt and restructure its focus events. Thanks to videos, livestreaming and online conferences, ‘Focus Climate’ can now be held – regardless of how the coronavirus situation develops in the spring. The new format retains the basic procedures of the previous focus events: workshops in which participants can exchange ideas in small groups are held in the afternoon. A panel discussion with experts is scheduled for the evening; because it will be broadcast via livestream, a large audience can attend the event.
