Cures for hereditary diseases, carbon-neutral cars, online political debate – technological innovations pave the way to previously unthinkable possibilities. But they can also harbour dangers and lead to new dependencies. In addition, what is useful to some is harmful to others – and not everything that is technically possible is socially desirable or ecologically responsible. TA-SWISS, the Foundation for Technology Assessment, examines the potential impacts of new technologies and assesses both the opportunities and the risks associated with an innovation. In doing so, TA-SWISS promotes public debate and facilitates democratic decision-making – because technological advances should serve people, not the other way around.
